About the artist

1939, Porto Alegre, Brazil. Lives and works in São Paulo.
Regina Silveira questions the traditional forms of visual representation. She is known for her research into the principles of perspective, its distortions and the study of shadows, which she deploys in large site-specific installations, and for her varied use of media: prints, porcelain, tapestries and cut laminates, digitally cut vinyl, light projections, video installations and virtual and augmented realities.
She holds a bachelor's degree in Painting from the Instituto de Artes of UFRGS (1959), and a master's (1980) and a doctorate (1984) from ECA-USP, where she is professor emerita. In the 1970s, under the dictatorship, she worked with printmaking, mail art and video; in the 1980s her research into perspective and shadow became her signature, with series such as Anamorfas, Simulacros and Enigmas and the installation In Absentia M.D., at the 1983 São Paulo Biennial.
Since the 1990s she has produced large-scale installations in museums and public spaces in Brazil, the United States, Europe and Asia. Her work is held in collections such as MoMA (New York), Museo Reina Sofía (Madrid), MASP, MAC-USP, Pinacoteca de São Paulo and the Museum of Fine Arts Houston. She is represented by Luciana Brito Galeria (São Paulo) and Alexander Gray Associates (New York).
